Jakarta, Sketsa.id – Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon has roared to an impressive USD200 million in global box office earnings during its opening weekend. Meanwhile, Disney’s Lilo & Stitch continues its strong run, surpassing USD850 million worldwide after four weeks in theaters. According to Variety on Monday (16/6/2025), these family-friendly films have captivated audiences with robust ticket sales.
How to Train Your Dragon grossed USD114 million across 81 international markets, claiming the top spot as the highest-grossing film at the global box office. The film also dominated North America with an USD83 million debut, bringing its worldwide total to USD197.8 million. Key markets include Mexico, which contributed USD14 million, the UK and Ireland with USD11.2 million, and China with another USD11.2 million.
Written and directed by Dean DeBlois, this live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon was produced with a USD150 million budget. Set in the mystical Viking village of Berk, the story follows Hiccup, a young teenager who forms an unlikely bond with an injured dragon he names Toothless. A live-action sequel, How to Train Your Dragon 2, is already slated for release in 2027.
Meanwhile, Lilo & Stitch continues to draw families with young children, earning USD31.1 million from 52 markets over the weekend. The heartwarming comedy about a mischievous alien has amassed USD491 million internationally and USD858 million globally. The film is on track to become the first release of the year to cross the USD1 billion mark.
In other box office news, Paramount’s Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, the eighth installment starring Tom Cruise, has surpassed USD500 million worldwide. The film added USD21 million from 66 territories over the weekend, boosting its international haul to USD340.5 million and its global total to USD506 million. However, with a hefty USD400 million production budget and theaters taking roughly half of ticket sales, the film is unlikely to break even at the box office.
Both How to Train Your Dragon and Lilo & Stitch highlight the enduring appeal of family-oriented storytelling, while Mission Immposible underscores the challenges of balancing high budgets with box office returns. (*)
